The Ghana Excellence Movement (GEM) is an independent, not-for-profit think tank that will work to improve the quality of life for Ghanaians through rigorous research and active engagement with the policy community.
Founding Members
The Ghana Excellence Movement was initiated by a group of Ghanaians who wish to play a constructive role in the development of the country.
Areas of Involvement
GEM will focus its energy and resources in the following areas:
- Effectiveness of sourcing and deployment of international aid ;
- Energy ;
- Education;
- Health;
- Sport and youth development;
- Employment and job creation.
Strategy
The Movement will employ a unique and dynamic combination of policy-based research, strategic communications and targeted outreach to engage and educate the public and policy makers on development issues.
Policy-based Research
The Movement will undertake independent, high-quality research in economics and other areas. Selected projects are conducted jointly with the Center for Global Development, with which the Movement plans to form an alliance. The Movement also strives to collaborate with developing country research institutions and specialists. The Movement’s research will address pivotal issues of development policy in the areas as outlined above.
Strategic Communications
One of the Movement’s key functions will be to ensure that its research products and policy recommendations reach policy makers, advocates, and the general public. The Movement will developed strategic communications tools including: policy briefs that synthesize its research and policy recommendations; issue briefs that offer short and timely analysis of key issues of immediate policy importance; strategically-timed events that draw current and former policy makers, academics, analysts and advocates from both developing and rich countries, and members of the media; and a website that features the experts, work and outreach activities of the Movement.
Targeted Outreach
To maximize its impact on policy-making and advocacy, the Movement will design programs, products and an outreach strategy tailored to each of its key target audiences: GHana executive and legislative branch officials; development scholars from around the world; print, radio and television media outlets; and the general public. The Movement will be unique among research institutions in its active engagement with non-governmental organisations and advocacy groups, and is looking to expand its strategic partnerships with organisations that have broad-based global public constituencies.
